Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
You can't get 300 wins and not be a great coach, the area will miss Robbins. He had some teams that were able to put up points in bunches and sometimes that stings a little. He had some great players, but a coach can kill a team, if he isn't good at what he is doing. The folks complaining are the same kind that talked about going to a nickle ,dime or a 3-4 in Appy's last state game- sometimes you have to play with the kids you have. Anyway, congrats to a great coach and - so,long and good luck.
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
robbins will be missed that is definite, i always admired him for his X's and O's ability, great man to talk football to! enjoyed him as a patient and learned that you cant always believe everything you hear. Grats phil!
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Not my favorite type of guy. This season the playcalling has had me scratching my head.
All that aside, he's still one of the best coaches in the state. You've brought a lot to Powell Valley, coach.

Are you saying it is okay to call Richlands Head coach the greatest coach ever considering the talent he has?Do you not feel like the athletes on that team deserve some credit?
Pretty much the way practice has always been..
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Phil and I never got along at all in LPD meetings and such, probably cause we are both stubborn buttholes, but I will say that he is one of the best and the numbers don't lie.
Congrats to him for being a great coach but I still don't like him much and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
A good coach whom I would have liked to seen win with more class over outmatched teams. He has the wins and the trophies and a coaching style unlike others in this area. I wonder if he would have had the same numbers if he would have stayed at John Battle? I guess we will never know, but anyway enjoy retirement.
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
I have always loved his interviews. He always says what is on his mind no matter if it is wrong, right, or if it hurts any ones feelings. Seems like Thurman at VHS is trying to take that place but he will never be another Robbins!
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Gratz Coach Robbins I hope you continue your success in your future endeavors. Hell of a coach! Hats off and Thumbs up:2thumbsup:
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Congrats,, I met him one time at a baseball game at PVHS. He took me and my buddy into the school and showed us the facilities. We shared some stories about Christiansburg and knew some of the same people and businesses. We just missed each other by a few years, ha.. He is very genuine and pleasing to talk with. I have no opinion one way or another as a coach. But he has accomplished a feat that very few coaches will ever attain.
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Coach Robbins is a great coach and a great guy. Some people had problems with him but he was great to me.
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
I think Phil is a Great Coach. The mans been nothing but good to me since I was in school back in 89-90 and I'm not one of his past players. I've enjoyed watching him and the Vikings through out the Years. I've cheered him and I've jeered his calls at times. Love him or hate him, you still have to respect Him. I've enjoyed Him being at Powell Valley
Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
Played for the man years ago. I promise you no other coach or school in the area takes care of their kids as far as food, equipment, weight room, clothes, brand new gear every year, like Phil Robbins has done at pv. Great Coach, anyone who says otherwise is foolish, has an agenda, or just mad you yourself or your son didn't get to play. Say what you want about him, MANY LPD and Regional titles, 7 State championships, and 1 state-Runner Up. Speaks for itself.

Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
just wanted to share a story about ole Phil, I had a very good friend, who has since passed on, make it to the VHSL all star game, for those who don't know, the top seniors in the previous years football teams are invited to play a football game at the end of the school year, usually sometime in June, anyways, our Coach didn't go to the game, so Coach Robbins walked out on to the field with him during player introductions. At this time I was a Junior and didn't really care to much for Coach Robbins, basically because I can't stand Powell Valley, but after this act, I was, am, a huge Coach Robbins fan. He will be missed! Good Luck!

This is very true, not one of our kids ever got hurt due to old or faulty equipment. The man protected his players and had them better prepared from an X's and O's standpoint than any other coach in the area. If you play at PV, you don't realize how lucky you had it until you get older and see some of the equipment, facilities, and coaching other schools have.

Re: Congrats to Phil Robbins...
I want to bump this, I heard an interesting story;
At every place PV has visted this year, they have acknowledged coach Robbins and his last year and all his records and such. But as the Appalachia week came up, a certain teacher at Appalachia High School threw an absolute fit when it was brought up to acknowledge Coach Robbins. She whined and made a big enough stink that word got back to Robbins, who just said forget it, its not worth the drama.
Wow, is all I can say. I have heard which teacher it was, but will not put a name up on here.
How classless and sad is that, I mean really. GC does not like Phil, Norton just LOVES coach Robbins, but both places acknowledged him during his last go around, yet a teacher at AHS was petty and vindictive enough to make sure it did not happen at Appalachia.
its not a shot at the people of Appalachia or the Appalachia team, nothing like that at all.
